The Yega Korape are a small people group living in Papua New Guinea's Oro Province, particularly in the Tufi District along the Cape Nelson headlands. Their identity has formed through generations of village life amid the dense forests, river valleys, and rugged coastal landscape of this part of the country. They are part of the broader Pacific Islanders affinity bloc and the New Guinea people cluster, where many small groups maintain distinct cultural traditions and community ties.
They are associated with the Korafe?Yegha language, a Trans–New Guinea language in the Binanderean family that is spoken along the northern coast of Oro Province. Korafe?Yegha has literature in a developing form and is used within daily community life.
The Yega Korape live in rural villages set among coastal headlands, forested hills, and riverine plains. Daily life is shaped by subsistence gardening, fishing, and gathering from the surrounding environment. Families plant gardens with root crops, bananas, and other staples that thrive in Papua New Guinea's tropical climate. Fishing from rivers and coastal waters supplements food supplies and supports daily nourishment and local trade within extended family networks.
Homes are built from materials available locally, such as timber and thatch. Extended families and neighbors cooperate in daily tasks like food production, shelter maintenance, and child?rearing, contributing to a strong sense of community. Because formal infrastructure is limited, travel to larger towns for healthcare or education often requires walking paths or simple watercraft. Community bonds and shared work shape life at every stage.
Almost all of the Yega Korape identify as Christian, with a range of evangelical believers among them. This indicates that Christian identity is widespread within the community, though the depth of biblical understanding varies among individuals. Traditional spiritual beliefs involving unseen forces connected to nature and daily life may still influence how some interpret life events, health, and community well?being alongside Christian identity.
The Korafe?Yegha language has Scripture available: portions of the Bible and the New Testament have been translated and are accessible in written form and through digital platforms. However, a complete Bible has not yet been finished, and resources such as gospel films in the language are not currently reported as available. This limits consistent access to all of God's Word in the language spoken within the community.
The Yega Korape need continued growth in understanding and living out the gospel of Jesus Christ in ways that transform personal life and community practices. While many identify as Christians, ongoing discipleship rooted in Scripture is crucial for deep spiritual maturity rather than a blend of belief systems.
Continued work on Bible translation and accessibility in the Korafe?Yegha language is important so that individuals and families can engage more fully with the entire Scriptures in the language of their daily life.
There is also a need for faithful local leaders who can teach sound doctrine, disciple believers, and help nurture strong, biblically grounded church communities.
Practically, improved access to healthcare, education, and reliable transportation would support physical wellbeing and broaden opportunities for long?term development that enhances both community stability and spiritual engagement.
Pray that the Yega Korape people would come to a clear and saving faith in Jesus Christ.
Pray that those who identify as Christians would grow in deeper biblical understanding and apply God's Word in daily life.
Pray for the completion and wider availability of the Bible in the Korafe?Yegha language so that the community can engage with all of God's Word in their language.
Pray for faithful local church leaders to be raised up who can teach, disciple, and shepherd others.
Pray that traditional spiritual beliefs would be replaced by confidence in the truth of Scripture.
Pray for improved access to healthcare, education, and transportation that supports the wellbeing and development of the Yega Korape community.
